Mauritius

With white sandy beaches and crystal blue waters, Mauritius is a popular honeymoon destination for many happy couples.
With colourful coral reefs, volcanoes and waterfalls, as well as private beaches, this exotic island makes the perfect destination for adventurers and those looking for something more relaxing.

Best time of year to visit
Mauritius sees most of its visitors in the summer months between May and October, which can make flights and accommodation a bit more expensive. However, from September–November and March–May, the island still gets a lot of sun and fewer tourists, which can make it a much cheaper time to visit.

Things to do
Although you can, and should, invest in at least one excursion on your trip, there’s still plenty to see and do around the island that won’t cost you a penny. Aside from beautiful beaches, hotspots like Rochester Falls, the pretty coastal town of Port Louis, and The Black River Gorges National Park are all free and are worth a visit.

Maldives

With stunning beaches and clear skies, the Maldives is a firm favourite for honeymooners looking for luxury. Picture yourself sitting on the soft sand under a shady palm tree, sipping on your favourite cocktail. Although some hotels on the island can be a little pricey, most beach resorts have guesthouses and Airbnbs that can save you a bit of money.

Currency
The local currency in the Maldives is the Maldivian rufiyaa, however this is classed as a non-convertible currency. This means you cannot swap your pounds for Maldivian rufiyaa before you go and, if you have any left at the end of your trip, British currency shops won’t be able to change it back. Most resorts will generally accept foreign cash such as British pounds, US dollars, or Euros.

Best time of year to visit
Although the Maldives get a little more rain between May–July and September–November, the island still gets warm temperatures during this time. Plus, as it’s out of peak season, you can often get good deals on flights and accommodation.

Things to do
Usually a trip to the Maldives will involve visiting more than one island. If you’re doing this, you can make your budget go further by visiting some of the cheaper resorts — such as Maafushi Island, Thulusdhoo Island, and Thoddoo Island — just as beautiful, but can cost you less money for transfers and accommodation.

Thailand

Known for its rich culture, fantastic food, and beautiful beaches, Thailand is another hugely popular honeymoon destination. Although flights can sometimes be on the expensive side, the cost of living in Thailand is low, which makes it the perfect option if you’re wanting to keep costs down.

Best time of year to visit
The cheapest flights to Thailand tend to be around May—October, with the later months usually being the cheapest times to fly. Although there is a little bit more rain during this time, flights and accommodation can be cheaper to entice visitors in the off-season.

Things to do
Thailand has plenty to do, even if you’re working to a budget. For example, a lot of temples are free to look around (although a donation is generally appreciated). You can also keep costs down by visiting street markets and trying some of the local street food. This is often just as, or even more, delicious than the food you’d get at any restaurant, but for much less money.
When travelling around Thailand, you might want to avoid any offers from tuk-tuk drivers, as they can often overcharge for small journeys that could be just a short walk away.

Bali

The exotic scenery, white sandy beaches, and year-round sunshine of Bali make it the perfect honeymoon destination. If you’re a fan of more athletic holidays, the country also has some fantastic surfing spots to visit.

For the best Bali deals, try to avoid the summer if you can. January–June and September–October are the best times to visit Bali, as crowds are usually smaller during these times, which can make flights and accommodation cheaper. For a honeymoon, April–June is a great time.

Things to do

Like Thailand, Bali has a fantastic culture to immerse yourself in, such as temples and museums that are either free or cost very little. Plus, if you go out of peak season, you won’t need to battle through any crowds at theses tourist hotspots.

New York

If you’re more a fan of the fast-paced city life, then New York might be the perfect honeymoon destination for you. It’s got accommodation and activities for any budget, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a bit of luxury one day, but cheaper options the next.

Best time of year to visit

Peak times for New York are summer and winter, which makes the spring and autumn months of April–June and September–early November cheaper times to visit. You can also get some great deals between January and February if you’re not too bothered about sun.

Things to do

New York has a whole host of museums and art galleries to visit for free or a small donation. Plus, with famous landmarks like Central Park to visit, you can truly make the most of your time for little money.

Any trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Statue of Liberty. Although the ferry to Liberty Island can be pricey, you can get a similar view of the world-famous landmark for free if you take the Staten Island ferry.
While flights and trips abroad may have to be put on hold for the foreseeable future, it gives you plenty of time to plan your dream honeymoon for 2021. By following the tips in this guide, you can visit a popular luxury destination, while keeping costs down.
